Brushing (and flossing!) twice a day helps remove food from the gaps between your teeth, and the plaque bacteria that builds up on your teeth. The longer you wait between brushing, the more plaque builds up. When you eat or drink sugary things, that plaque releases acid which attacks your teeth. The bacteria also contribute to gum disease.

National Smile Month has tips on how to brush well.

Don’t rinse out toothpaste after you brush ! The protection offered by toothpaste works best when it is left on your teeth for as long as possible. You should spit out any excess, but leave the rest. If you have sensitive teeth, you will need to use sensitive toothpaste every day as the protection is temporary.

If you do have sensitive teeth, make sure you see a dentist to find out why !

Fluoride mouthwash is a helpful aide, but not a replacement for careful brushing. Mouthwash can help get the final particles of food from the hard-to-reach places, and if you don’t follow the spit-don’t-rinse advice for toothpaste, it would be better than using plain water to rinse out after brushing. Normally you should use mouthwash at a different time to brushing. Some mouthwash can result in staining, so your teeth may be healthy but they don’t look as clean. If you need this type of mouthwash, you should talk to your dentist about how to use it best and what to do about staining.

Chewing on gum can help produce saliva, which lowers the acid level in the mouth after eating more quickly. You will be chewing for a while, and this makes a bigger difference than just drinking some water to wash away the acid because the saliva carries on washing away the acid while you chew. This is only true for sugar-free gum !

Many people are recommended six-monthly visits, but these can be more often if your dentist needs to keep an eye on something, or less often if you almost never need treatment after a check-up. It’s always better to find a problem early at a regular check-up than to wake up in the night with throbbing toothache !

Each time you eat or drink something sugary, the plaque bacteria that live in your mouth use it to create acid which attacks your teeth. If you snack often, acid is produced often, and that causes more damage than eating a healthy meal 3 times a day.

National Smile Month has helpful advice on what foods have more or less risk, and when it’s best to brush.
