Chewing on gum can help produce saliva, which lowers the acid level in the mouth after eating more quickly. You will be chewing for a while, and this makes a bigger difference than just drinking some water to wash away the acid because the saliva carries on washing away the acid while you chew. This is only true for sugar-free gum !
